How the MLB 162-Game Balanced Schedule Operates

Each Major League Baseball team plays 162 regular-season games over a six-month window stretching from late March through the final Sunday of September or early October. Under MLB's balanced schedule format introduced in 2023, every single franchise plays at least one series against all other 29 clubs in the league.

Division, League & Interleague Breakdown

  • Divisional Play (52 Games): Teams play 13 games against each of their four divisional rivals (two home series, two road series).
  • Intraleague Play (64 Games): Teams play six or seven games against each non-divisional club within their own league (American League or National League).
  • Interleague Play (46 Games): Teams play a three-game series against 14 interleague opponents, plus a four-game home-and-home geographic rivalry series (e.g., Yankees vs. Mets, Cubs vs. White Sox, Dodgers vs. Angels).

Handling Rainouts, Postponements and Split Doubleheaders

Unlike indoor arenas, most baseball venues are open-air ballparks subject to weather conditions. When inclement weather threatens player safety, the home plate umpire or league officials may declare a delay or postponement. Postponed games are typically rescheduled as split doubleheaders (two separate nine-inning games played on the same day) or made up on mutual off-days.
